Installation Methods.
TPO can be installed three ways, and the method affects performance in Central Valley conditions:
- Mechanically attached. The membrane is fastened to the deck with plates and screws, then the next sheet is welded over the fastener row. Most common for new construction and large open roofs.
- Fully adhered. The membrane is bonded to the insulation with adhesive across its entire surface. This method provides superior wind uplift resistance and a cleaner appearance. Preferred for high-wind areas and buildings where aesthetics matter.
- Ballasted. The membrane is loose-laid and held down by river rock or pavers. Least common in the valley due to weight considerations and the difficulty of locating leaks under ballast.

A TPO roof is a big investment. Protecting it needs a maintenance program that addresses the specific challenges of flat commercial roofing in the Central Valley.
