Prepare Your Roof for Winter Storms.

A fall checklist before the Central Valley rain season hits.

The Central Valley dry season can lull you into thinking your roof is fine. Then November shows up. Atmospheric rivers, wind, and the odd hail storm put every roof to the test. A repair that costs little in October costs a lot in January.

This checklist covers everything you should do between September and November to make sure your roof is ready for what winter brings.

Clear the Gutters. All of Them.

Valley oaks, sycamores, and almond trees drop leaves aggressively in fall. If gutters are clogged when the first heavy rain arrives, water backs up under the roof edge, soaks the fascia board, and can push into the attic.

  • Remove all leaf debris from gutters and downspouts
  • Flush each downspout with a hose to confirm flow
  • Check that downspout extensions direct water at least 4 feet from the foundation
  • Tighten any loose gutter hangers — they weaken over the hot summer months

If your gutters are damaged, rusted, or pulling away from the fascia, fall is the time to replace them. We install seamless gutters that handle Central Valley rainstorms without leaking at the seams.

Trim Overhanging Branches.

Branches that touch or hang over your roof are a problem waiting to happen. High winds snap them. They drop debris that clogs valleys and gutters. And they give squirrels and raccoons a highway to your attic.

Cut back any branch within 6 feet of the roof surface. If the tree is large or close to power lines, hire a licensed arborist. This is not a DIY job when the tree is tall.

Inspect the Roof Surface.

From the ground with binoculars, scan the entire roof for these issues:

  • Cracked, curled, or missing shingles. Central Valley summer heat speeds up aging. Shingles that looked fine in June may have curled by October.
  • Exposed nail heads. Nails that have backed out are entry points for water.
  • Damaged flashing. Check around chimneys, vents, skylights, and wall intersections. Gaps mean leaks.
  • Dark patches or moss. These indicate trapped moisture and potential decay underneath.

If you spot any of these, schedule a free professional inspection before the rains start. Fixing a few shingles or resealing flashing in October costs far less than repairing water damage in February.

Check Attic Ventilation.

Proper attic ventilation prevents condensation buildup during the cooler months. When warm interior air meets a cold roof deck, water forms. Over a full winter, that water rots the decking from the inside out.

  • Confirm soffit vents are not blocked by insulation or debris
  • Check that ridge vents or attic fans are functioning
  • Look for any existing moisture stains from last winter

Review Your Insurance Policy.

Before storm season is the time to understand what your homeowner's insurance covers. Most policies cover sudden storm damage — wind, hail, falling branches — but not gradual wear. Know your deductible. Know your filing deadline. And know that Econo Roofing handles storm damage claims from inspection to adjuster meeting to completed repair.

Read our step-by-step insurance claim guide so you know exactly what to do if damage occurs.

Consider a Maintenance Plan.

If annual roof prep feels like a lot to manage, our roof maintenance program handles it for you. We inspect, clean, and address small issues on a regular schedule so nothing is missed. This is especially valuable for homeowners with older roofs or tile roofs that need periodic resealing.

As the only Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor in Stanislaus and Merced County, every maintenance visit is backed by the same quality standards that earned us that designation. Visit our FAQ for common questions about maintenance costs and scheduling.

The Central Valley winter storm pattern

Central Valley winters bring three distinct storm types: steady tule fog (35-50 days per year, mostly November-February), atmospheric river events (occasional but intense. capable of dropping 4-8 inches of rain in 48 hours), and Sierra runoff effects (high winds and pressure changes as winter storms transit the mountains). Each creates unique roof stresses needing unique preparation.

Tule fog water deposits constantly on roof surfaces, speeding up moss growth on shaded slopes and degrading underlayment around penetrations. Atmospheric rivers stress drainage systems and expose any inadequate flashing detail. High winds during storm transit lift unsealed shingles and stress flashings around chimneys, pipes, and skylights.

Pre-winter inspection checklist

Schedule a fall roof inspection by mid-October if possible. Items to verify: gutters and downspouts cleaned of summer debris (acorns, leaves, agricultural particulates), valley flashing free of built up debris (a dam in the valley redirects water under shingles), pipe boots intact (no cracks in the rubber boot around plumbing vents), ridge caps secured (lifting ridge caps are wind-vulnerable), and visible shingle damage repaired (lifted, missing, or curling shingles need attention before storms arrive).

For tile roofs: verify mortar at hip and ridge joints is intact (cracked mortar is a water entry point), check for shifted tiles (tiles displaced during summer wind events should be reset), and confirm penetrations are sealed (skylights, vents, chimneys are common winter leak sources).

Tree management around the roof

Winter storms with strong winds put any tree limb within reach of your roof at risk of breakage. Trim back any branches within 6-10 feet of roof surfaces — both to prevent direct strike damage and to reduce leaf accumulation in gutters during fall. Trees with weak branches, visible decay, or that lean toward the house should be evaluated by an arborist before winter.

Attic preparation often missed

Roof preparation isn't just about the roof surface. Attic ventilation matters: a properly-vented attic stays close to outside heat, reducing condensation that causes interior water damage. Inspect: soffit vents clear of insulation (insulation pushed against soffit vents blocks airflow), ridge or gable venting unobstructed, and attic insulation in good condition (settled or wet insulation reduces R-value dramatically).

If you've had any minor roof leaks in the past 1-2 years, check the corresponding attic area carefully. Even repaired leaks can leave water-damaged insulation that becomes a winter problem when heat drop and condensation forms.

Emergency preparation

Despite preparation, winter storms can still cause roof issues. Have a plan for emergency response: know which roofers in your area offer emergency leak service (Econo Roofing's emergency line is (209) 668-6222), have the phone number stored before you need it, identify where your home shutoff valves are (in case of major water intrusion), and consider a roof tarp emergency kit for severe situations where expert response may be delayed.

Why This Matters

Behind every article: 30+ years of Central Valley roofing.

Every article on this blog is written or reviewed by someone who has actually installed, repaired, or inspected the specific roof types and scenarios discussed. That distinction matters. Most roofing content online is written by content marketers who have never set foot on a roof. The advice may sound right, but it misses the practical realities — how shingles age in 110°F Central Valley summers, how tile underlayment fails at year 25-30, how flashing wear compounds over winter Pacific storms, how insurance adjusters evaluate damage claims in Stanislaus County. Field experience changes the answer.

Mario Espindola founded Econo Roofing in 1996 in Delhi, California. Three decades later, our team has installed, repaired, and inspected thousands of Central Valley roofs. We’ve catalogued the failure patterns specific to this region: cracked pipe boots from year 8-10 UV exposure, lifted ridge caps after winter wind events, valley flashing wear at year 15, tile underlayment hitting its 25-30 year service window on 1990s Mediterranean homes. Each of these has a known cause, a known fix, and a predictable cost — but only when diagnosed by someone who has seen it hundreds of times.

The credentials matter for accountability. Econo Roofing is the only Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor in Stanislaus County and Merced County — a designation held by fewer than 1% of US roofing contractors. We’re also GAF Master Elite (top 2% of GAF contractors), CertainTeed Select ShingleMaster (top 1% of CertainTeed contractors), and GAF Gold Elite. No other roofing contractor in the region holds all four credentials. That means we can register manufacturer-backed warranties — OC Platinum Protection (lifetime, non-prorated), GAF Golden Pledge (50-year material plus 25-year workmanship), and CertainTeed 5-Star Protection — that simply aren’t available through uncertified roofers. Each manufacturer audits our installs to maintain our certification, which keeps us honest on every project.

If you’re reading this article because you have a real roofing question or concern, the next step is a free on-site inspection. Our certified inspector walks the entire roof, checks all flashing, vents, valleys, and pipe boots, and inspects the attic for moisture and ventilation issues. We document the inspection with photos and deliver a written report within 24 hours. No pressure, no hard sell — if your roof is healthy, we say so in writing. Schedule at (209) 668-6222. License #749551, verifiable at CSLB.ca.gov. Family-owned and operated since 1996, with three regional offices in Delhi, Ripon, and Turlock serving 52 cities across the Central Valley.
