How to Prepare Your Home for a Roof Replacement
Last updated March 30, 2026
A new roof is a big project. A little preparation on your end makes the process smoother, faster, and less stressful for everyone.
You have signed the contract. Materials are ordered. The crew is scheduled. Now comes the part most homeowners wonder about: what do you actually need to do before a roof replacement begins?
The good news is that most of the heavy lifting is on us. But a few simple steps on your part protect your property, reduce disruptions, and help the crew work efficiently. Here is your complete preparation checklist.
The Week Before: Outside Preparation.
Move vehicles out of the driveway and away from the house. Roofing crews need driveway access for material delivery and a dumpster. Old shingles, nails, and debris will be coming off the roof, and even with tarps and careful work, the area directly around your home becomes a work zone. Park on the street or at a neighbor's house for the duration of the project.
Protect your landscaping. Move potted plants, garden decorations, and patio furniture at least 15 feet away from the house. For flower beds and shrubs directly against the foundation, our crew places protective tarps, but relocating anything portable gives your plants the best cover. If you have a vegetable garden near the house, cover it with a tarp or plastic sheeting.
Trim overhanging branches. Tree limbs that hang over the roof slow the crew down and create safety hazards. If any branches are within 6 feet of your roofline, have them trimmed before work begins. This also improves the long-term health of your new roof by reducing debris accumulation and shade-related water problems.
Talk to your neighbors. A roof replacement is noisy. Nail guns, hammering, and material handling generate big sound, usually starting early in the morning. Give your immediate neighbors a heads-up about the timeline. Most people appreciate the courtesy, and it prevents any surprise complaints.
The Week Before: Inside Preparation.
Clear your attic. Vibrations from the tear-off and nailing process can shake loose items stored in the attic. Remove anything fragile or valuable. Cover remaining items with old sheets or drop cloths to protect against dust that may filter down during the tear-off process.
Remove wall decorations in upper rooms. The hammering and nailing during install creates vibrations that travel through the roof structure into the walls below. Take down mirrors, framed photos, and shelving in upstairs rooms or any room directly below the roofline. This takes five minutes and prevents broken glass or fallen items.
Secure ceiling-mounted fixtures. If you have ceiling fans, hanging light fixtures, or chandeliers on the top floor, check that they are securely fastened. The vibration will not damage properly mounted fixtures, but loose connections could be an issue.
Plan for pets and children. The noise, strangers, and open work zone around your home create stress for pets and safety concerns for small children. Arrange for pets to stay inside a quiet room away from the work area, or consider boarding them for the day. Establish clear boundaries with children about staying away from the work zone.
Day of Installation: What to Expect.
The crew usually arrives between 7:00 and 8:00 AM. The project manager will walk the property with you to confirm the scope of work before anyone gets on the roof. From there, the process follows a predictable sequence: tear-off of old materials, inspection and repair of the underlying deck, install of underlayment, and then install of new roofing materials.
For a standard residential roof, expect the crew to work from early morning through late afternoon. The loudest phase is the tear-off, which usually happens in the first few hours. Install is somewhat quieter but still involves steady nail-gun use throughout the day.
Power outlets may be needed for equipment, and the crew will ask permission before using them. Water access for the crew is appreciated, especially during Central Valley summers when heat climb above 100 degrees.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a roof replacement take?
Most residential roofs in the Central Valley take 1 to 3 days. A standard single-story home with a straightforward roofline can often be completed in a single day. Larger homes, complex roof designs with multiple valleys or dormers, or projects requiring wide decking repair may take 2 to 3 days.
Do I need to be home during the roof replacement?
You do not need to be home for the entire project, but we suggest being available at the start and end of each work day. Being reachable by phone is important in case the crew discovers unexpected issues like rotted decking that require your approval before proceeding.
Will a roof replacement damage my landscaping?
A expert crew takes precautions to protect your property. We place tarps over landscaping, flower beds, and outdoor furniture near the house. However, heavy foot traffic around the edge is unavoidable. Moving delicate potted plants and patio furniture before work begins helps prevent any accidental damage.
Can I finance my roof replacement?
Yes. Econo Roofing offers flexible financing options to make roof replacement affordable. We work with multiple lenders to find plans that fit your budget, including low monthly payment options. Visit our financing page or ask your project manager for details during your estimate.
