GAF vs. Owens Corning Shingles

Last updated March 30, 2026

Two industry giants. Both make excellent shingles. We install both at the highest certification level. Here is what actually matters when choosing between them...

GAF and Owens Corning are the two largest shingle makers in North America. Together, they account for most residential roofing installs across the country. Both make reliable, well-engineered products. Both offer wide warranty programs tied to contractor certification.

As one of the few contractors in the Central Valley certified at the highest level by both manufacturers, GAF Master Elite and Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, we are in a unique position to give you an unbiased comparison. We have no reason to push one over the other. We install whichever is right for your home.

Product Lines Compared.

GAF's lineup centers on the Timberline series, the best-selling shingle line in North America. The range includes:

  • Timberline HDZ: The flagship architectural shingle. LayerLock technology, StrikeZone nailing area, 130 mph wind warranty. This is what most homeowners choose.
  • Timberline AS II: Algae-resistant version with identical performance specs plus StainGuard Plus cover.
  • Timberline UHDZ: Ultra-high definition with thicker profile and deeper shadow lines for a premium look.
  • Camelot II / Grand Sequoia: Designer shingles that replicate slate and wood shake at a fraction of the weight and cost.

Owens Corning's lineup is built around the Duration series:

  • Duration: The core architectural shingle. SureNail technology provides a visible nailing strip and 130 mph wind warranty. TruDefinition color for a richer, more dimensional look.
  • Duration FLEX: Enhanced flexibility and impact resistance. SBS-modified for better performance in extreme temperatures.
  • Duration STORM: SBS-modified with Class 4 impact resistance, the highest rating available.
  • Berkshire / Woodmoor / Woodcrest: Premium designer shingles with distinctive profiles.

Warranty Tiers: Where the Real Difference Lives.

The shingles themselves are closely matched. The warranty programs are where meaningful differences emerge, and they depend entirely on your contractor's certification level.

GAF Warranty Tiers:

  • Golden Pledge: 50-year material, 25-year workmanship (no deductible), 10-year tear-off coverage. Only available through Master Elite contractors.
  • Silver Pledge: 50-year material, 10-year workmanship. Available through Master Elite and Certified contractors.
  • System Plus: 50-year material, 5-year workmanship. Available through any GAF Certified contractor.

Owens Corning Warranty Tiers:

  • Platinum Protection: Lifetime material, lifetime workmanship (non-prorated for first 10 years). Only available through Platinum Preferred contractors.
  • Preferred Protection: Lifetime material, 25-year workmanship. Available through Preferred contractors and above.
  • Standard Protection: Lifetime material, 10-year workmanship. Available through any OC-certified contractor.

Price Points.

For a typical roof replacement in the Central Valley, GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning Duration are priced within 5 to 10 percent of each other. The material cost difference is minimal. The real price difference comes from the shingle tier you choose (standard vs. designer). your contractor's labor rate.

Designer lines from both makers (Camelot II, Grand Sequoia, Berkshire, Woodmoor) run 30 to 50 percent more than their standard architectural shingles. These offer a premium looks but the same core weather cover.

Durability in Central Valley Heat.

Both brands perform reliably in the Central Valley's extreme summers, where roof surface heat can go over 160 degrees. The key factors that determine heat performance are:

  • Granule adhesion: Both GAF and OC use high-quality ceramic-coated granules that resist shedding under UV exposure.
  • Asphalt formulation: Both use oxidized asphalt in their standard lines. OC's Duration FLEX and STORM use SBS-modified asphalt. This stays flexible in extreme heat and cold, making them slightly better suited for the valley's temperature swings.
  • Ventilation dependency: Both manufacturers void warranties if attic ventilation is inadequate. Proper ventilation is key in the Central Valley.

Our Recommendation.

For most Central Valley homeowners, you cannot go wrong with either brand. Here is how we guide our customers:

  • Choose GAF Timberline HDZ if you want the industry's most popular shingle, proven track record, and access to Golden Pledge warranty coverage through our Master Elite certification.
  • Choose Owens Corning Duration if you prefer TruDefinition color blending for a richer look, or if you want lifetime workmanship coverage through our Platinum Preferred certification.
  • Choose OC Duration STORM if you are in a hail-prone area or want the highest impact resistance available (Class 4).

The most key factor is not which brand you choose. It is who installs it. A premium shingle installed by an uncertified crew with poor ventilation will fail years before a standard shingle installed correctly by a certified contractor. That is why certification matters, and why we keep the highest tier from every major maker.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which is better, GAF or Owens Corning shingles?

Neither brand is categorically better. Both manufacture high-quality shingles that perform well in the Central Valley. GAF's Timberline HDZ is the best-selling shingle in North America. Owens Corning's Duration series offers comparable performance with TruDefinition color technology. The best choice depends on your budget, looks preference, and the warranty tier your contractor can offer.

  • What is the difference between GAF Golden Pledge and Silver Pledge warranties?

GAF Golden Pledge is their top warranty tier, covering 50 years on materials and 25 years on workmanship with no deductible. Silver Pledge covers 50 years on materials but only 10 years on workmanship. Golden Pledge is only available through GAF Master Elite contractors, which represent the top 2% of roofers nationwide.

  • Does Econo Roofing install both GAF and Owens Corning shingles?

Yes. Econo Roofing is both a GAF Master Elite contractor and an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor. We are certified at the highest level by both makers, which means we can offer the best warranty tiers from each brand. We suggest the product that best fits each homeowner's specific needs.

  • How do GAF and Owens Corning shingles hold up in extreme Central Valley heat?

Both brands perform well in high heat when properly installed with adequate ventilation. GAF uses Advanced Protection shingle technology for impact and wind resistance. Owens Corning's SureNail technology provides a strong bond that resists blow-offs. In our 30+ years of know-how, both brands hold up reliably in Central Valley summers when installed to maker specifications.

Why This Matters

Behind every article: 30+ years of Central Valley roofing.

Every article on this blog is written or reviewed by someone who has actually installed, repaired, or inspected the specific roof types and scenarios discussed. That distinction matters. Most roofing content online is written by content marketers who have never set foot on a roof. The advice may sound right, but it misses the practical realities — how shingles age in 110°F Central Valley summers, how tile underlayment fails at year 25-30, how flashing wear compounds over winter Pacific storms, how insurance adjusters evaluate damage claims in Stanislaus County. Field experience changes the answer.

Mario Espindola founded Econo Roofing in 1996 in Delhi, California. Three decades later, our team has installed, repaired, and inspected thousands of Central Valley roofs. We’ve catalogued the failure patterns specific to this region: cracked pipe boots from year 8-10 UV exposure, lifted ridge caps after winter wind events, valley flashing wear at year 15, tile underlayment hitting its 25-30 year service window on 1990s Mediterranean homes. Each of these has a known cause, a known fix, and a predictable cost — but only when diagnosed by someone who has seen it hundreds of times.

The credentials matter for accountability. Econo Roofing is the only Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor in Stanislaus County and Merced County — a designation held by fewer than 1% of US roofing contractors. We’re also GAF Master Elite (top 2% of GAF contractors), CertainTeed Select ShingleMaster (top 1% of CertainTeed contractors), and GAF Gold Elite. No other roofing contractor in the region holds all four credentials. That means we can register manufacturer-backed warranties — OC Platinum Protection (lifetime, non-prorated), GAF Golden Pledge (50-year material plus 25-year workmanship), and CertainTeed 5-Star Protection — that simply aren’t available through uncertified roofers. Each manufacturer audits our installs to maintain our certification, which keeps us honest on every project.

If you’re reading this article because you have a real roofing question or concern, the next step is a free on-site inspection. Our certified inspector walks the entire roof, checks all flashing, vents, valleys, and pipe boots, and inspects the attic for moisture and ventilation issues. We document the inspection with photos and deliver a written report within 24 hours. No pressure, no hard sell — if your roof is healthy, we say so in writing. Schedule at (209) 668-6222. A note from Mario

Why this work matters to us.

Roofing is more than a transaction. The roof you install on a Central Valley home protects your family for decades. Wrong materials, wrong methods, or wrong crew, and you’re replacing it again in 12 years instead of 30. Right materials, right methods, and a properly trained crew, and your roof outlasts the mortgage. The difference is install detail, manufacturer-grade materials, and the certifications that hold contractors accountable.

Mario Espindola founded Econo Roofing in 1996. Three decades later, the company has grown to a 20-person team across three regional brands — Econo Roofing in Delhi, Nushake Roofing in Ripon, and DeHart Roofing in Turlock — but the operating principle hasn’t changed. Do the work right the first time. Document everything with photos. Stand behind the install with a written workmanship warranty. Register every manufacturer warranty within 30 days of completion. Treat every customer like they’re a neighbor — because in the Central Valley, most of them actually are.

Our credentials are earned, not bought. Econo Roofing is the only OC Platinum Preferred contractor in Stanislaus and Merced County — a tier held by fewer than 1% of US roofing contractors. We’re also GAF Master Elite (top 2% of GAF contractors), CertainTeed Select ShingleMaster (top 1% of CertainTeed contractors), and GAF Gold Elite. No other roofing contractor in the region holds all four credentials simultaneously. Each manufacturer audits our installs to maintain certification, which means we can’t cut corners on material grade, install method, or finish quality. The audits keep us honest on every project.
