OC Platinum Preferred vs. GAF Master Elite: what's the difference.

By Econo Roofing Editorial Team · Published March 3, 2026

Two certifications. Two manufacturers. Both represent the top tier of contractor credentialing, but they work differently and deliver different benefits to homeowners.

When you're shopping for a roofer, you'll encounter a lot of badges, seals, and certifications. Most are marketing. A contractor buys into a program and gets a logo to put on their website. But two certifications genuinely mean something: Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor and GAF Master Elite. They represent the highest tier of credentialing from the two largest roofing manufacturers in North America. Understanding what each requires (and what each delivers) helps you make a smarter decision when your roof is on the line.

What OC Platinum Preferred actually requires.

Owens Corning structures its contractor program in three tiers: Preferred, Preferred Plus, and Platinum. Platinum is the top. It is not a certification you can simply apply for. It's an invitation. Owens Corning extends Platinum status selectively, based on a contractor's history of installation volume, documented quality of work, customer satisfaction records, and financial standing.

The specific requirements to maintain Platinum status include:

  • Invitation-only status. Owens Corning does not publish an open application process for Platinum. Contractors are evaluated and selected based on installation history and quality metrics.
  • Ongoing installation volume. Platinum contractors must maintain significant annual installation volume using OC products: demonstrating active, ongoing experience rather than occasional use.
  • Financial stability verification. Owens Corning reviews contractor financial health to ensure customers aren't working with businesses at risk of closure or inability to honor warranty callbacks.
  • Insurance and licensing. Verified current licensing in all jurisdictions served, plus adequate liability and workers' compensation coverage.
  • Customer satisfaction tracking. Complaint history and resolution practices factor into ongoing status. Consistent customer satisfaction is required, not just installation volume.

Nationwide, fewer than 1% of roofing contractors hold OC Platinum Preferred status. In Stanislaus and Merced County combined, Econo Roofing is the only contractor that currently holds it.

What GAF Master Elite actually requires.

GAF (the largest roofing manufacturer in North America by volume) runs a similarly rigorous program for its top-tier contractors. Master Elite represents roughly the top 3% of all GAF-certified contractors. To qualify and maintain status, contractors must meet verified standards across several categories:

  • State licensing. GAF verifies that the contractor holds a valid contractor's license in every state where they operate, not just a general business license.
  • Adequate insurance. GAF requires documented proof of both general liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage. This protects homeowners from liability exposure.
  • Commitment to ongoing training. Master Elite contractors must complete GAF-approved training programs and stay current on installation techniques and product updates.
  • Good standing in the community. GAF reviews complaint history, BBB standing, and customer feedback as part of qualification and annual renewal.

The distinction between a standard GAF Certified Contractor and a GAF Master Elite contractor is significant. Most contractors who install GAF shingles are Certified. Only about 3% reach Master Elite, and that gap matters for what warranty they can offer you.

What each certification means for your warranty.

This is where certifications become tangible for homeowners. The warranty you receive depends directly on the tier of contractor you hire. Both programs follow the same principle: higher-tier contractors unlock stronger warranties.

With OC Platinum Preferred: Homeowners qualify for Owens Corning's Platinum Protection Limited Warranty. The strongest warranty OC offers. This covers the full replacement cost of materials for extended periods (lifetime coverage on qualifying systems) with no dollar cap on material replacement. It also includes a workmanship warranty that covers installation defects, something manufacturers don't typically cover at all for non-certified installers. If a Platinum contractor installs your roof and it develops a problem related to installation, OC backs the repair.

With GAF Master Elite: Homeowners qualify for GAF's Golden Pledge warranty. The highest warranty GAF offers. This extends coverage beyond materials to include workmanship, and is backed directly by GAF (not just the contractor). If the contractor goes out of business, GAF still honors the warranty. Standard GAF warranties available through lesser-tier contractors do not include this protection.

The underlying principle is the same: manufacturers extend their strongest warranties only through contractors who have proven they install products correctly. A warranty on incorrectly installed materials is meaningless, which is why top-tier status requires demonstrated installation competency, not just purchasing volume.

Why holding both is uncommon.

Owens Corning and GAF are direct competitors. Most contractors align primarily with one manufacturer's product line: training, purchasing, and relationship-building with a single partner. Maintaining top-tier status with both simultaneously requires exceptional volume, consistent quality across two distinct product systems, and ongoing commitment to training programs for each.

Econo Roofing holds OC Platinum Preferred, GAF Master Elite, and CertainTeed Select ShingleMaster certifications. This means three things for Central Valley homeowners:

  • Material flexibility. We're not locked into recommending one manufacturer's products to protect our contractor relationship. We can honestly recommend OC, GAF, or CertainTeed based on what best fits your home, budget, and conditions.
  • Maximum warranty options. Depending on the project, we can offer the highest warranty tier from multiple manufacturers, giving you choices rather than a single option.
  • Proven installation quality. Both OC and GAF have independently verified our installation standards. That's not a marketing claim. It's a condition of maintaining status with both programs simultaneously.

Frequently asked questions.

  • Can any roofer claim to be "OC Preferred" or "GAF Certified"?

The entry-level tiers of both programs are more accessible. A contractor can become OC Preferred or GAF Certified with relatively minimal requirements. The distinction is at the top tier: OC Platinum is invitation-only and covers fewer than 1% of contractors nationwide. GAF Master Elite covers roughly 3%. Always ask specifically which tier a contractor holds, and verify directly with the manufacturer's website.

  • Does the brand of shingles matter as much as the certification?

Installation quality matters more than brand. A premium shingle installed incorrectly will fail prematurely. A good-quality shingle installed by a top-tier certified contractor will perform well. That said, both OC and GAF make excellent products at the top of their lines. The manufacturer certification matters primarily because it signals installation quality, not just product choice.

  • What happens to my warranty if the contractor goes out of business?

This is a critical question. Standard workmanship warranties are only as good as the contractor standing behind them. GAF's Golden Pledge warranty (available through Master Elite contractors) is backed directly by GAF: so if the contractor closes, your warranty remains valid. OC's Platinum Protection warranty has similar manufacturer-backed provisions. This is one reason top-tier status matters for long-term peace of mind.

  • How do I verify a contractor's certification status?

Both Owens Corning and GAF maintain searchable contractor databases on their websites. You can look up any contractor by name or location to verify their current certification tier. Don't rely solely on the contractor's own marketing materials, verify directly at owenscorning.com and gaf.com.
